Nineties Nostalgia

Hello everyone! Christmas is getting close isn't it? I do feel Christmassy but... mostly I'm having an attack of 90s nostalgia!

When I saw D earlier this year it brought back my love of Visual Kei, which had dimmed a bit since I became more and more into Lolita. My favourite bands are the "vintage" ones (don't say has-beens!) like Baiser, SHAZNA, Raphael, LAREINE and of course MALICE MIZER. Mana-sama has been fabulous since the beginning!

Of course, since I didn't even know of any of those bands until 6 or 7 years ago, my experience of the 90s had more to do with The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Clueless, the Spice Girls and losing my milk teeth. Still, Dionne and Hilary were pretty fabulous too!

Looking at 90s FRUiTs street snaps is also really inspiring. I know I'm late to the party when it comes to reminiscing about old-school Lolita, but I'm not the sort of person to jump on a new trend (or revival) right away. Rather, I think about it for ages and finally incorporate it in some small way here and there. I like how 90s fashion had a bit of frumpiness to it, not as immaculate and shiny as these days.

So with these various inspirations I put together this coordinate:

~Rundown~
Hat- Vintage
JSK- Metamorphose
Necklace- Innocent World
Everything else- Offbrand

Remember Mana's loooong hair and big hats? And Kamijo's too! This is a wig, but I hope my hair will be this long in a few years. My tights were actually navy to match the hat.

Thanks for looking!

~A note~
I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who "liked" my photo in the Lockshop competition. I was very pleasantly suprised to see how many likes it had received. It was not something I was expecting! I was so touched- no prize could be lovelier! Thank you.

  1. You look lovely!
Sometimes I am a bit nostalgic too. I like seeing the "old school" looks and always think "woow, why haven't I knew this before??". The 90's j-rock bands and stuff. I feel old! XD

Haha, I feel that way too! I grew up in the 90s and now when I look at those bands and fashions they seem so aged. I think "Oh no, am I aged too??" XD

  4. MY CHILDHOOD IS BACK OMG

No really, those hats! They were everywhere! And somehow that general style too, although how it seems so familiar I've no idea... in any case it can't be purely 90's because it looks so awesome and elegant, both of which the 90's were not. Love that necklace!

  5. The 90s definitely had a lot of good TV shows. That's actually back when I used to love watching TV xD Not so much anymore. Sadly the kids today will never know of the great shows most of us got to witness back then.

That's a really awesome coord you put together! It actually reminds me of some of the outfits that used to be on this show (speaking of the 90s) called "Blossom". It was pretty good and she always wore cute outfits like the one you put together. Great job =3

  6. Nineteens are inspiring (even if you were just a pre-teen as I was). Some of the best music ever was composed then, not just Japanese albums but also underground styles concerning other unscenes (goth had its major and more remarkable master contributions in the early perios). Really glad you are fond about the decade.

By the way, simply adoring your hat.

Thank you! Only the top of the wig is a little shiny and fake-looking, but I have cleverly disguised it with a hat!

Haha, I love your reaction! From the label inside the hat (British Home Stores, darling~) I'm guessing it's actually 90s. Living through that time I agree that it wasn't a particularly elegant era, but with hindsight we can pick out the best bits XD

It was my TV-watching period too! After-school TV was so good in those days. I remember loving Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Moesha and Sister Sister :) I've just had a look at Blossom, the outfits are definitely very cute!

It took a while to dawn on me how much I love that period, I think because it's only now that enough time has passed for it to be fully appreciated. Thanks for your comment, I want to learn more about 90s music now!

    Empire of Roses~
Yes, I don't know how people manage to get onto them so fast! Everyone on EGL is tired of old school already and I'm only just getting there...

Thank you! I guess I'll be wearing more 90s-ish outfits now and again :)

  9. What a lovely outfit with that hat! And the wig looks natural, for a second I thought it was your own hair!

  10. I love the old school look a lot, especially with the rolled brim hat.

Count me in among to fooled, I also thought the wig was your real hair!

  12. You look great as usual. I love that wig on you but to be honest i thought it was your own hair!
I like good coordinates, I don't really care if its a full set, if its more original than that, handmade, brand... old school, super ott, as long as it looks good i'm all for it but i do understand that one does grow bored if everything seems the same all the time. I am very jealous of that dress you know? It's the one dress in that print that i really want (and colorway). You have such great taste!
If you don't post before that and even though you are a bit out of love for it, Have a very merry Christmas!

Thank you! I think the hat makes the outfit.

    Tyler~
The rolled-brim hat is really retro, isn't it?

I wish my hair was really this long!

Oh, I'm glad to read that! I hope the general public were also fooled.

This dress is among the first Lolita items I got, and the one that made me really devoted to Classical style. I still love it a lot, and I hope you can get the same one! It think it will be wonderful on you.

A Merry Christmas to you too!

  16. I'm always talking about how much I miss the 90's. Your coord makes me think of what Blossom would wear if she was a Loli

Oh wow, that's great! I'm so glad I managed to capture something of the era. Sometimes when I do a themed outfit I wonder if it's only themed in my imagination XD
